Titans end losing streak after thrilling Golden Point finish to Dragons clash

The Titans have broken up a five-game losing streak and escaped with a 20-16 win over the Dragons with just one minute left of Golden Point.

Jamayne Isaako led in the corner for the match-winning try after an error-ridden nine minutes of Golden Point, which included several field goals.

The Titans started on the right foot and opened the scoring in the sixth minute. Toby Sexton planted a bomb for Phillip Sami who knocked it back for Corey Thompson who passed on AJ Brimson to score.

They got a golden opportunity when Dragons veteran Josh McGuire was sinned out for a professional foul.

But the Dragons didn’t just repel the Titans, they scored.

However, the Titans hit back just seven minutes later to grab the lead.

The Dragons responded with a try and penalty. It looked like they would escape with the win until Jarrod Wallace crashed.

The game transitioned into Golden Point and dragged on for nine minutes until Isaako crossed the intersection after the Titans spread the ball to the right.

The game went to Golden Point after neither time was able to score points after Wallace’s attempt.

Jarrod Wallace crashed over a Tanah Boyd ball. Jamayne Isaako started the conversion and put in 16 points with seven minutes to go.

The Dragons extended their lead over Moses Suli, who proved too big and powerful to handle. Ben Hunt played an important role in the run-up.

The Dragons bent their noses forward after Zac Lomax scored a penalty from the sidelines.

Jack de Belin scored a crucial try. Zac Loimax converted in lockup scores 10-all with just over 20 minutes left.

Fox League captured a dejected Josh McGuire taking off his boots in the barns during halftime, suggesting his night was over. Sideline reporter Jake Duke reported that McGuire had suffered a groin injury. It was a sad ending for the veteran’s 250th NRL game.

The Titans again hit back from Toby Sexton’s boot. Sexton put in a gambler for Beau Fermor, who appeared out of nowhere to ground the ball. But Dragons fullback Tyrell Sloan didn’t buy the ground to clear the ball and ran 70 yards before being dragged down by No. 1 Jayden Campbell’s opponent. It ended up being a waste as the bunker finally awarded Fermor the try.

The Dragons were awarded a penalty and ignored calls from the bench to shoot for goal and it paid off. Ben Hunt backed off and threw a long pass to Moses Suli who sent winger Mat Feagai aside for a four-pointer.

After defending their line for 16 minutes, the Dragons were dealt an untimely blow when Josh McGuire was penalized for making a tackle despite never coming off the sidelines.

The Titans got on the board first. Toby Sexton planted a bomb for Phillip Sami who knocked it back for Corey Thompson who passed on AJ Brimson to score.

The Gold Coast’s latest win came in dramatic fashion against the Wests Tigers, but the Titans have struggled to find form ever since.

However, Coach Justin Holbrook made a few changes this time around, with Jayden Campbell returning at fullback and pushing AJ Brimson to five-eighth.

Patrick Herbert and Kevin Proctor also miss the new lineup with Esan Marsters and Jarrod Wallace taking their places.

Brian Kelly scratched late due to an illness with Phillip Sami shifting to the centers and Corey Thompson – who was initially dropped – coming in the 17.

Whether all those changes will be enough to ignite anything from the Titans remains to be seen.

As for the Dragons, they had a mini-resurgence but collapsed back to Earth last week after a 42-6 defeat to the Storm.

Coach Anthony Griffin has also made some major changes to his spine. Andrew McCullough is out with an injury, sending Moses Mbye to the hooker and Tyrell Sloan being recalled to 17 at fullback.

It will be Sloan’s first NRL game since March after being controversially dropped after the first three games.

Jack the Belin starts at the lock and Tariq Sims descends back to the bank.
