If you’re looking for an affordable entry into the Apple ecosystem, the iPhone SE is your best bet. In its third generation, the iPhone SE (2022) retains everything that makes the series great: flagship processing, the latest software, a compact size and a relatively cheap price. However, like any smartphone, the phone is not perfect and has a host of bugs and glitches. We’ll look at some common iPhone SE 3 (2022) issues and how to fix them.
Our verdict: iPhone SE 3 (2022) review
Problem #1: Random shutdown or reboot
Ryan Haines / Android Authority
One of the most common issues faced by iPhone SE 3 (2022) owners is the phone shutting down or restarting randomly.
Possible solutions
- Some users say that a factory reset will help fix the problem, at least for a while. Make sure to backup all critical files and data as this step will erase everything. Go to Settings–>General–>Transfer or Reset iPhone and tap Delete everything†
- Setting the device as new by going to recovery mode works better. Below are the instructions to do this.
- This problem seems to be more common since the update to iOS 15.4.1, but a few users have also had this problem with iOS 15.4. Since there is no good solution, the only option is to wait for a new software update to fix the problem. Make sure to report the problem to Apple through the feedback form†
Problem #2: Phone won’t ring when receiving calls

Ryan Haines / Android Authority
Some users have reported that their iPhone does not ring when they receive a call.
Possible solutions
- Make sure you haven’t accidentally turned the phone off. Check the silent mode switch on the left side of the phone above the volume rocker. It’s a little switch that you could have flipped without realizing it.
- Make sure focus mode is not enabled. All calls, messages and notifications are automatically muted when the mode is activated. Swipe up from the bottom of the screen to open the Control Center and tap the focus icon to disable it if it’s enabled.
- If you have connected your phone to a Bluetooth device then it could be a software glitch where the phone still thinks the devices are connected. Open the Control Center, turn off Bluetooth and check if the problem goes away. You can then turn Bluetooth back on.
- Go to Settings–>Phone and check if Silence unknown callers is on. If so, disable it to disable this feature.
- Go to Settings–>Sounds and Haptics† Make sure the ringer volume is set to maximum. You can also change the ringtone to something louder.
- The iPhone SE (2022) has an IP67 rating, so it is resistant to water and dust. However, if your phone is submerged, then there could be a blockage. Wait for the phone to dry completely and see if the problem goes away.
- In extreme cases, it could be a hardware issue. Set one appointment at your Apple store† They will run a diagnosis and see if it is a hardware or software issue.
Problem #3: Apps Not Working / Phone Freezes

Ryan Haines / Android Authority
Some iPhone SE 3 (2022) users find that the apps on their phones won’t load or crash.
Possible solutions
- If an app won’t load, check if it’s an issue on just your phone or on everyone. Look at Apples System status to see if it’s a broader problem. Check for non-Apple apps Downward Detector†
- If it’s just your phone, there may have been a problem setting up your new phone from a backup. It is best to uninstall and reinstall the problematic app from the App Store.
- If you can’t download an app or it takes a long time, long press the app icon on the home screen and tap Prioritize Download†
- Some users say that restarting the phone is enough. In extreme cases, you may need to factory reset the phone and set up the device manually (don’t load apps from a backup).
- If an app is causing the phone to freeze then you should do a soft reset. Press the Volume Up button, press the Volume Down button, then press and hold the Power button until the phone reboots and you see the Apple logo.
Problem #4: Phone switched to dark mode automatically

Dhruv Bhutani / Android Authority
A few users randomly see dark mode activated on their phones even though the theme has not been changed in the settings menu.
Possible solutions
- Go to Settings–>Accessibility–>Screen and Text Size and uncheck all options (except for auto-brightness if you want to keep it activated). If Appearance say lighteven though the phone is in dark mode, change its appearance to Dark anyway. Then restart the phone, go back to the settings and set it to light again.
Problem #5: “Update required to use mobile data” error

Ryan Haines / Android Authority
Some iPhone SE 3 (2022) owners are having trouble connecting to cellular data and are seeing this error on the settings page.
Possible solutions
- If the mobile data settings of the phone do not update automatically then you need to do it manually. Go to Settings–>General–>About–>Carrier and follow the instructions to update the carrier settings.
- You can also try resetting the network settings (this will reset the Wi-Fi settings). Go to Settings–>General–>Transfer or Reset iPhone and tap Reset network settings†
Problems #6: Apple CarPlay Problems

Users are experiencing a problem connecting their phones to Apple CarPlay correctly. It won’t connect or the screen is blank even though Siri is responding.
Possible solutions
- There is no fix for this problem so you may have to wait for a software update. You can try some basic troubleshooting to see if that helps.
- If you’re having trouble with a wired connection, try a different USB cable. For wireless connections, make sure both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are turned on by going to Settings–>Wi-Fi and Settings–>Bluetooth.
- Make sure Siri is turned on.
- Go to Settings–> Screen Time–> Content & Privacy Restrictions–> Allowed Apps and make sure CarPlay is activated.
- Go to Settings–>About–>CarPlay and tap Forget this car (if it is a previously established connection). Then go through the CarPlay setup process all over again.
Most iPhone SE 3 (2022) issues require a software update

Ryan Haines / Android Authority
iPhone problems don’t have many workarounds and usually rely on basic troubleshooting or software updates. Apple’s software updates often bring a lot of bug fixes, so make sure to update to the latest software version when available. You can use the iOS Updates page to see the bugs fixed by the new updates. Don’t forget to let Apple know about any bugs and glitches you encounter using the feedback form†
