The revamped PS Plus lineup is stacked, as soon as you feel like it

With the big relaunch of PS Plus in the offing (get your Zero Dawn joking), we finally have an idea of what exactly to expect. Today, in a blog postSony outlined everything — games, streaming offerings, a partnership with Ubisoft — coming to the service. It is much. Let’s break it down.

PS Plus 2.0, first officially announced in March, is a total overhaul of the long-running PS Plus service, essentially folding all of the different PlayStation subscription plans into one. It is available in three levels, where you can read more about it herebut the general distribution is:

  • PS Plus essential: More or less the standard PS Plus subscription that people are signing up for today. $10 ($14) per month, $60 ($83) per year.
  • PS Plus extra: Same as PS Plus Essential, but it also gives access to a games-on-demand library of “hundreds” of PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 games. $15 ($21) per month, $100 ($139) per year.
  • PS Plus Premium: In addition to the games library included with PS Plus Extra, you can also stream and download PlayStation games from the PS1 era – a bit like the current PS Now service – and get time-limited trials of new first-party PlayStation games . $18 ($25) per month, $120 ($167) per year.

Which games are part of the library?

While the option to play PS5 exclusives at no extra cost was a compelling selling point of PS Plus 2.0, the initial lineup leaves a lot to be desired. Only three PS5 exclusives will be available at launch: ReturnDestruction All Starsand the Demon Souls redo. Pour one out for Rivet.

In any case, the library is built up through an impressive array of cross-gen games, available on both PS4 and PS5. Highlights include: Marvel’s Guardians of the GalaxyGhost of Tsushima (the Director’s Cut version on that), Death StrandingControl: Ultimate Editionand Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales

About 30 games of Ubisoft’s games-on-demand service, Ubisoft+, will also be available to PS Plus Extra and Premium subscribers. The only relatively recent recording is: Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, which apparently everyone under the sun has already played. The rest is for series that recently had a new item or two – watchdogsSteepFar cry 3Far cry 4 — or are smaller titles, such as the excellent Child of Light

Rounding out the list are some great PS4 games – basically a repeat of the current “PS Plus collection” available to current subscribers, bolstered by a handful of third-party hits. Highlights include: Red Dead Redemption 2god of warUncharted 4Uncharted: Lost LegacyOuter Wilderness Cities: SkylinescelesteThe Last of Us: Remasteredand Marvel’s Spider-Man

Wait … why isn’t the PS5 version of it? Marvel’s Spider-Man including?

Beat me! (Sony didn’t respond to requests for comment.) Insomniac’s entire cross-gen treatment Spider Man spell has been a mess

Strange. So, what’s the deal with classic games?

Players who sign up for the most expensive tier also get downloadable access to some of the “classic” games. It’s strange what Sony considers ‘classic’. Some make perfect sense: The escape of primatesJumping Flashdark cloud† Others, such as the BioShock remaster and, er, Kingdoms of Amalur: Recalculate† Less sense.

More up in the air is the issue of digital ownership: When Sony initially announced PS Plus 2.0, some players were (rightly) concerned that they might have to spend money to play games they’d already bought on older machines. If you’ve bought digital versions of PS1 and PSP-era classics, you don’t need to subscribe to PS Plus to play them, Sony says. You can just go to the PlayStation Store and download them again as soon as they are available. But then again, “some titles will also be available for individual purchase.” It’s not yet clear which games those are, or if the process will be as smooth as Sony says it will

Which games can I stream?

If you’re signed up for PS Plus Premium, you can stream a ton of PS3 games, including NotoriousDevil May Cry HD Collectionthree Ratchet and Clank games, and Demon Souls (the original, not the remake). Many of the more action-oriented games require split-second button input. It will be interesting to see if and how latency hinders those games. Sony requires an internet connection of at least 5 Mbps. In comparison, for its cloud gaming, Microsoft does not require a minimum but recommends 20 Mbps on consoles.

What game demos are available?

With that highest level you can also demos – get this – a total of six games for two hours each. Sony says the countdown only counts down when you’re “in the game,” but it’s unclear if that includes time you’ve paused or in menus or whatever.

At launch, Farming Simulator 22Tiny Tina’s WonderlandsHorizon Forbidden Westand WWE 2K22 are available on both PS4 and PS5. On PS5 you can get demos from Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves (which essentially provides refreshed versions of games already fully included as part of the games-on-demand library) and Cyberpunk 2077† hmm, I wonder why the PS4 version of that? is not included…

Okay, when does this all start?
