A hand surgeon has testified that Johnny Depp could not have lost the tip of his middle finger as he told jurors it had happened in his civil lawsuit against ex-wife Amber Heard.
Most important points:
- A surgeon has testified that Johnny Depp’s version of the events that caused his severed finger was improbable
- Depp says he lied to protect Heard before, saying he squeezed his finger between doors
- During the trial, which is now in its sixth week, both sides have undergone grueling cross-examination
The finger injury – which occurred during a March 2015 fight in Australia between Depp and Heard – was one of the main points of contention in the lawsuit.
Depp said he was injured when Heard threw a bottle of vodka at him.
Heard has said she never specifically saw how it happened, but that it happened one night when an enraged Depp sexually assaulted her with a bottle of liquor.
Depp is suing Heard for libel in Fairfax County Circuit Court over a December 2018 op-ed she wrote in The Washington Post describing herself as “a public figure who represents domestic violence.”
His lawyers say he was defamed by the article, even though his name was never mentioned.
Judges show photos of severed fingers
Depp has denied ever hitting Heard, saying she was the abuser in the relationship.
Heard has testified on more than a dozen separate cases of physical abuse she says she suffered at the hands of Depp.
In testimony given Monday, surgeon Richard Moore testified about the severed finger when jurors saw horrific photos of the injury.
He said Depp described his palm as resting on a beam when he was hit by the bottle.
dr. Moore, who did not treat Depp, testified that Depp’s description is unlikely, largely because his fingernail remained intact.
The surgeon said the fingernail was exposed, as Depp described the placement of his hand, and would be damaged.
dr. Moore also said there would have been other cuts to the rest of his hand from the glass that shattered on impact.
While Depp told the jury that Heard’s finger chopped off by throwing a vodka bottle, at the time of the accident he told people and sent text messages that he had done it to himself.
At one point, he said, the finger was trapped between massive accordion doors.
Depp now says he lied to protect Heard.
dr. Moore testified that entrapment of the finger in accordion doors would be consistent with the injury.
People camp to get seats during the trial
The trial is now entering its sixth week.
Monday’s testimony was relatively mundane in a lawsuit that has cast an ugly look at the couple’s toxic relationship.
There had been an expectation that Heard Depp’s lawyers would call the booth on Monday, but that didn’t happen.
Jurors had already heard extensively from both Depp and Heard, each standing in the stands for four days and undergoing grueling cross-examination.
Also on Monday, a psychiatrist testified that Depp’s behavior fit the pattern of a person whose drug and alcohol abuse contributed to domestic violence.
Depp’s lawyer questioned the ethics and credibility of the psychiatrist’s opinions, as he had never conducted an investigation into Depp.
The trial has attracted increasing public attention throughout its length.
People camped overnight and bickered about seats in line as they tried to get one of the 100 courtroom seats allotted to the public.
During a morning break, a woman professed her love for Depp and asked when he would admit that he was the father of the baby she was holding in her arms.
She was removed from the courtroom.
