‘Remarkable’: Broncos’ insane 31-point blitz stamps comeback stunner over Titans

The Broncos scored 31 unanswered points to storm over the top of Justin Holbrook’s Titans, moving them into the top four of the league ladder.

After the Titans held a 24-4 lead at halftime, the Brisbane side proceeded to dismantle the Gold Coast defenses.

Kevin Walters’ men took one of the most unlikely victories, winning 35-24 as the Titans became the first team in history to hold an “undesirable” record.

“There’s some unwanted history at stake here for the Titans,” Dan Ginnane said.

“First team in league history to give up two 20-point lead in the same season.”

Just before halftime, the Broncos looked good and managed to score only once while the Titans had two men in the sin bin.

During that period, the Gold Coast squad was even able to cross on its own for a try thanks to a dummy half attempt by David Fifita.

Te Maire Martin kicked off his side’s 31-point attack with a slicing try, before the Titans gave the Red Hill club another four-pointer after a bizarre short kick-off.

Cory Paix dribbled the ball forward, scooped it up and stepped past a Gold Coast defender who found Jordan Riki in space.

Herbie Farnworth was able to cross, before Corey Oates found space down the wing and kicked the ball back in to find Kurt Capewell who took an improbable lead and eventually won the game.

“There’s no question that this game has been turned upside down,” said Corey Parker.

MATCH RE-CAP

70TH MINUTE

The Broncos took the lead for the first time in the game, courtesy of some brilliance from veteran winger Corey Oates.

Young gun Ezra Mam found Oates in space, who charged down the sidelines and found Kurt Capewell in the center to scoop the ball and score.

“Brisbane has overcome a 20-point deficit and took the lead, which is remarkable,” said Dan Ginnane.

“From the other side of the halfway point, Ezra Mam throws a great ball to find Corey Oates,” Alexander said.

“It was all Brisbane.”

53rd MINUTE

Broncos fullback Te Maire Martin crossed for the second of the evening, scoring his first try for his new club.

Martin tried to release the ball late into his hand, but it was knocked down and bounced back in its path, allowing him to take a four-pointer.

“Good for this young man, has ticked all the boxes since he came back from that early retirement,”

“His first attempt in over three years.”

Then the Titans immediately attempted a bizarre short kick that allowed Cory Paix to scoop the ball and find Jordan Riki in space.

The bustling backrower darted away for a 40-yard attempt.

“The Broncos try twice in two minutes. They’re going crazy at Suncorp,” Ginnane said.

“There’s no question that this game has been turned upside down,” said Corey Parker.

32ND MINUTE

The Titans had sent two men to the sin box within 90 seconds, giving the Broncos a chance to score on the stroke of half-time.

Sam McIntyre was the first to leave after interrupting Selwyn Cobbo’s fast ball game, before Esan Masters pushed ball carrier Kurt Capewell down several times.

“Get off Esan, you could be in trouble, he could be in trouble, it’s 13 out of 11, Esan Masters, poor discipline, terrible discipline,” Dan Ginnane said.

“He got away with it until that last push.”

The Brisbane side collapsed after Te Maire Martin took advantage of an easy overlap to find Selwyn Cobbo in the corner.

“Cobbo scores his 10th of the season and is celebrating,” said Alexander.

Just minutes later, million dollar man David Fifita stormed over the line to score and improbably try with only 11 Titans on the field.

Fifita shot from the dummy half and charged at him to inspire his side after a horrific end to the half.

“No one in the Suncorp stadium can believe what happened,” Alexander said.

25TH MINUTE

The Titans have scored their third of the night and are piling up points in the first half.

AJ Brimson pounced on a Toby Sexton grubber and acrobaticly dropped the ball to the ground as the dead ball line quickly approached

“This is the first half that the Titans are putting together,” Ginnane said.

“What an incredible feat AJ Brimson did to get that ball down,” said Alexander.

7TH MINUTE:

Broncos edge forward Jordan Riki was sent off for a late hit on halfback Toby Sexton.

“Late contact, causes whiplash, he goes to the bin,” said referee Gerard Sutton.

“It’s a tackle they want to take out of the game, it wasn’t necessary,” said Fox League’s Greg Alexander.

Just a minute later, the Titans crossed over for their first try of the night, courtesy of some footwork from Jayden Campbell.

The Gold Coast fullback got the ball into space, turning young Broncos cannon Ezra Mam inside out before going comfortably for a four-pointer.

“Isn’t he a player, Jayden Campbell…always a threat because of the footwork and the speed,” said Alexander.
