Johnny Depp and Amber Heard have already lost work due to their lawsuit. Will their career ever recover?

After an explosive six-week libel lawsuit followed by millions on social media and live TV, Johnny Depp and Amber Heard each face an uphill battle: trying to rebuild their image and career.

The verdict handed down Wednesday in Virginia showed that Mr Depp had been vilified by three statements in an op-ed written by Ms Heard in which she said she was a victim of abuse.

The jury awarded him over $10 million (over $13 million). But the jurors also concluded that Ms Heard was defamed by an attorney for Mr Depp, who accused her of creating a detailed hoax around the abuse allegations. She got $2 million dollars.

Depp had hoped the libel lawsuit would help restore his reputation.

However, legal and entertainment experts said both actors’ reputations have been damaged by ugly details about their brief marriage that emerged during the televised trial that was watched by millions.

How will the process affect their career?

Former entertainment attorney Matthew Belloni, who writes about Hollywood’s cases for the Puck newsletter, said the personal damage from the lawsuit was “too icky” for a studio to handle.
