CHELSEA LOSS DEFENSIVE STAR
German international defender Antonio Rudiger has joined Chelsea with Spanish and European champions Real Madrid, the two clubs confirmed on Thursday.
The 29-year-old central defender, who did not have a contract with Chelsea, has signed a four-year contract in the Spanish capital, Real has announced.
In a statement on their official website, Madrid said Rudiger will be unveiled on June 20 during a press conference at the club’s training ground.
He is currently part of Germany’s squad for a series of UEFA Nations League matches, with Hansi Flick’s team playing Italy on Saturday and then going up against England and Hungary before facing Italy again on June 14.
Rudiger, who started his professional career at VfB Stuttgart, spent two seasons with Roma before joining Chelsea in 2017 for a reported £29 million ($36.4 million).
In his time at Stamford Bridge, Rudiger most notably won the FA Cup in 2018 and the Europa League in 2019, although he did not play in the final final.
He then helped Thomas Tuchel’s squad to win the Champions League last year. “We are saying goodbye to Antonio Rudiger on his departure from Stamford Bridge as his Chelsea contract expires, ending his five trophy-filled years at the club,” the London side said in a statement.
Rudiger joins a Real club that has just won the Champions League by beating Liverpool 1-0 in last weekend’s final in Paris.
He will battle with Eder Militao, David Alaba and Nacho Fernandez for a place at the heart of the Real defence.

MATA JOINS UNITED EXODUS
Juan Mata will be the last player to leave Old Trafford when his contract expires at the end of the month, Manchester United said on Thursday.
A major overhaul is expected at United in the coming months as new manager Erik ten Hag tries to put his stamp on the club after a hugely disappointing season.
United confirmed the departures of Paul Pogba and Jesse Lingard on Wednesday, while Nemanja Matic and Edinson Cavani will also leave the club this summer.
Mata has made 285 appearances and has won three trophies since moving from Chelsea in 2014 for £37 million.
However, the 34-year-old former Spanish international has only played a supporting role in recent seasons.
“Thank you for dedicating eight years of your career to United, Juan,” United said in a statement.
“Everyone at the club wishes you all the best for the future.”
BALE PINS farewell to REAL
Gareth Bale wrote a farewell letter to Real Madrid on Wednesday, ending the Welshman’s nine-year spell with the Spanish club, saying his “dream came true”.
Bale will leave Real Madrid when his contract expires at the end of June, and the 32-year-old has yet to confirm what he will do next.
His future will likely depend on Wales qualifying for the World Cup in Qatar, retiring as a possible option if they fail.
“I am writing this message to thank all my teammates, past and present, my managers, the backroom staff and the fans who have supported me,” Bale wrote in a letter to Real Madrid, which was posted on social media in both the English as the English. Spanish.
“I arrived here nine years ago as a young man who wanted to fulfill my dream of playing for Real Madrid. To wear the immaculate white kit, wear the badge on my chest, play in the Santiago Bernabeu, win titles and be a part of what it is so famous for, winning the Champions League.
“I can now look back, reflect and honestly say that this dream has become a reality and much, much more.
“To be part of the history of this club and to achieve what we achieved when I was a Real Madrid player has been an incredible experience that I will never forget.” Real Madrid later released a statement describing Bale as “a player who is now forever part of the legend of this club”, who “lived one of the best times in our history in these nine years”. “Real Madrid is and will always be his home and we wish him and his whole family every success,” the statement said.
After coming from Tottenham to Madrid for €100m in 2013, Bale won 19 major trophies with Real Madrid, including five Champions Leagues, three La Ligas and one Copa del Rey.
More than his trophies, Bale will be remembered for a handful of spectacular moments, including his two goals off the bench against Liverpool in the 2018 Champions League final in Kiev, the first of a stunning overhead kick.
He scored another hugely important goal in the 2014 Champions League final in Lisbon, his header to the back post gave Real Madrid the lead against Atletico Madrid in extra time as they won the club’s much-anticipated 10th European Cup.
An icy relationship with the Spanish press damaged his reputation, with aspects of his personal life – including his passion for golf and a lack of fluency in Spanish – increasingly being used to support the idea that he had lost interest in his Real Madrid- career.
The issue exploded in 2019 after Bale celebrated Wales’ qualifying for Euro 2020 by standing behind a flag that read: “Wales. Golf. Madrid. In that order.”
Last season, Bale played just five times in La Liga and seven minutes in the Champions League, again saving his best for Wales, as he scored a hat-trick against Belarus in September and then twice against Austria in March to win their World Cup. qualification to keep hopes alive.
REAL ‘LEGEND’ LEAVES
Real Madrid confirmed Isco’s departure on Wednesday, calling the Spanish midfielder a “legend of the club”.
Isco’s contract expires at the end of the month and the 30-year-old is considering his next move. He is associated with Real Betis and Sevilla.
“Real Madrid would like to express its gratitude and affection to Francisco Alarcon ‘Isco’, who, in the nine years in which he has defended our badge and shirt, has managed to become the legend of our club,” a club statement read.
“His football has left his mark on all Madridistas who have shared with him this long road full of successes with great unforgettable moments.”
Isco moved from Malaga to Real Madrid at the age of 21 and went on to win five Champions Leagues, three La Ligas and one Copa del Rey.
He made 353 appearances in his nine seasons for the club and played in four Champions League finals, including two as starters, against Juventus in 2017 and Liverpool in 2018.
But Isco has been a fringe player in recent seasons and was not picked by Carlo Ancelotti to play even one minute of Real Madrid’s last triumphant Champions League campaign.
Isco wrote a farewell message on social media on Monday. He said: “After nine years I have finished my time at the club that has made it possible for me to fulfill all the dreams I had when I was little.”
