Aprilia’s Aleix Espargaro continued his reign at the top of the timesheets during final practice for the Catalunya MotoGP in Barcelona, with the top four covered by 0.244s

The full range of rear tires were in use for race preparation during the hot and slippery FP4.

Most started on the hard back before trying the medium as well. But Espargaro was among a handful of riders who stayed with the medium the entire time, while teammate Maverick Vinales (then later Alex Marquez and briefly Darryn Binder) surprised by riding the soft.

Brad Binder fell for the second time today, with Alex Marquez to the left due to a very quick outburst by the last right-handers.

Qualifying 1, for those outside the top ten after the third free practice session, including Vinales, Enea Bastianini and Joan Mir, is now underway.

Marc Marquez absent after opting for a fourth surgery on his right arm. The eight-time world champion will be replaced by HRC test driver Stefan Bradl.

According to Marquez’s teammate Pol Espargaro, the new chassis and swingarm that Marquez had tried has now been handed over to LCR’s Takaaki Nakagami.

Reigning world champion Fabio Quartararo returns to the scene of his ‘wardrobe failure’ in 2021 with a new two-year Yamaha contract under his belt, leading the MotoGP standings by eight points over Aprilia’s Aleix Espargaro.

Enea Bastianini has fallen 28 points from the top after a fall in Italy, with last Sunday’s home winner Francesco Bagnaia in fourth, but still 41 points behind Quartararo.

An official post-race test will be held at the Barcelona circuit on Monday.

Jorge Martin will miss the test and will have surgery to treat nerve problems in his right hand.
