‘Can’t believe it’: Big Daddy stunned with brutal KO, ‘has a crack’ at Australian boxing legend

Australian boxing legend Barry Michael thought it was time for Lucas Browne to make a mistake during Sunday’s fight with New Zealand contender Junior Fa.

Instead, 43-year-old Michael devastatingly proved him wrong with a thunderous first-round TKO victory over Fa for the IBF International Heavyweight Title.

Fa boasted with an impressive 19-1 record, with his only loss coming by unanimous decision to Joseph Parker.

Michael was concerned that this was one fight too many for Browne (30-3) and the bookmakers agreed, with ‘Big Daddy’ a 13-1 outsider for his fight with Fa.

But even Paul Gallen, who knocked out Browne last year, supported him.

“I spoke to him afterwards” [Gallen fight] and thought he might give up but came up with that big win over Faiga Opelu,” Michael continued main event

“I’ll tell you something, he faces a tough task tonight. At this stage in Lucas’ career, it’s a big step and an uphill battle for him.”

However, the fight didn’t go as planned for Fa as Browne provided an early high leading up to the highly anticipated showdown between George Kambosos Jr. and Devin Haney

The Australian knocked Fa down early in the first round and it looked like the referee would have to step in and declare the fight.

“Fa fell,” Michael said in the commentary.

“I think he’s gone. He’s in all sorts of trouble. He’s got to stop it, I think. He’s done. He’s not getting through this, no way. Extraordinary scenes here, I can’t believe it. One right hand and it is over.”

The fight was allowed to continue, but not for long as Fa went down again, with an overhand right that ended the fight as Browne made a statement.

“Wow, what a win for Lucas Browne,” said Michael.

“I didn’t expect this, to be honest. Wow, that was incredible.”

And Browne had a few choice words for Michael and more generally all of his post-fight doubters.

“Are we still too old?” Browne asked, yelling straight at Michael from the ring.

“He came and joked with me because I thought he should retire, but he proved me wrong,” Michael said.

“I didn’t make any public comments before this fight, but I just thought it was a tough question. One thing, like I said, the last thing that comes with a boxer is his strength and he has strength.”

“More power than ever, fitter than ever… f*** everyone,” cried an excited Browne after the fight.

Michael wasn’t the only one who didn’t see Browne’s painful win coming, and Jeff Fenech also admitted that he “thought it might be time” for ‘Big Daddy’ to hang up the gloves.

“He proved everyone wrong,” Fenech said.

“In the heavyweight division you are one blow out of disaster.”

That was all Fa needed to get into a world of trouble and Paul Kent said the fight could have easily ended after the first knockdown.

“He almost had convulsions there on the canvas at one point,” Kent said.

“I don’t know how he got out. Junior Fa is brave when they come, but unfortunately too big a task.”
