The dark side of fame: Karl Stefanovic reveals disturbing incident involving a scary fan who approached him in a public bathroom
Speaking on the Not a success overnight podcast this week, the Today host said he doesn’t like to complain about being a celebrity, but he admitted that fame certainly has drawbacks — including audience members who don’t respect boundaries.
Karl, 47, explained to host Gus Worland how he was recently using the bathroom on a night out when a fan recognized him and secretly tried to snap a picture of him with his pants down.

For weeks he feared that a ‘d**k pic’ would appear on social media.
“My ability to have a great time out is limited,” he said.
“I’m very disappointed with some of the things the public has done, like in the men’s restrooms, [someone] taking pictures of my willy… and I’m totally oblivious to it.’
Karl managed to laugh off the intrusive incident, saying he was “not at his best” when the covert photo was taken.

Another patron warned Karl about the man taking a picture of his penis, and he immediately asked a police officer outside the hall to try to find the culprit.
The Channel Nine star tried to describe the bathroom friend to the agent, but had no luck as most of the people in the room looked the same.
“I said, ‘Sir, police officer, this guy has a shot of my dick,'” Karl said with a chuckle.
Paranoid: For weeks he was afraid a ‘d**k pic’ would appear on social media
“I had been paranoid for weeks that Karl’s little dick picture would come out… but I don’t think he ever got the chance,” he added.
Speaking generally about his life in the limelight, Karl said he once felt “huge fear” of the tabloids and paparazzi, but now realizes how lucky he is to have such a high profile career.
‘Nobody will feel sorry for you… you have a camera in your face at the airport? boo hoo!’ he said.
“It can be intrusive to have a camera with you… although they aren’t many anymore, but it causes fear, tremendous fear, but you’re not allowed to show that to the public.
Not all bad: Karl (left, with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese) generally said of his life in the spotlight that he once felt “huge fear” of the tabloids and paparazzi, but now realizes how lucky he is to have such a high profile career
“It’s like, dude, first-world problems. The pros outweigh the cons and I am the luckiest man in the world. And if you go out and believe it, you’ll have no problem with the cameras.’
Karl, who began his career as a cadet reporter for WIN Television in Cairns and Rockhampton, is one of Australia’s most popular TV presenters.
He started working for Channel Nine in 2000 as a news presenter and was promoted to host of the Today show in 2005.
He now anchors the breakfast show with Allison Langdon.
