It seems the frosty relations between the Sussexes and the Cambridges continued during the Queen’s Jubilee celebrations, with the estranged princes and their families apparently spending little to no time together.
Prince Harry and Meghan reportedly gave an “olive branch” to Prince William and Kate and invited them to Lilibet’s birthday picnic at Frogmore Cottage, but they were not present.
Instead, the busy Cambridges – along with their children Charlotte, 7, and George, 8 – went for a day trip to Wales as part of the anniversary celebrations.
It meant the Cambridge kids couldn’t meet baby Lilibet or catch up with cousin Archie.
“Things are still fraught – William is still wary of spending any time alone with Harry because you never know exactly what will be reported next,” a UK royal insider told Page Six.
Prince Harry and Meghan flew from their home in the US to attend the four-day anniversary celebrations, but kept themselves relatively inconspicuous.
The Sussexes were not allowed on the balcony of Buckingham Palace for the Trooping the Color on the first day of the festivities, instead watching with other royals from the Major General’s office overlooking the Horse Guards Parade.
And they were greeted with cheers and some cheers as they joined the royal family at a thanksgiving service for the Queen at St Paul’s Cathedral in London.
It was their first public appearance together in Britain since they resigned from their royal duties.
The Sussexes spent a lot of time at Frogmore Cottage during their stay. The Queen, Lilibet’s great-grandmother, is known to have met the royal toddler for the first time and saw her twice during their visit.
The Queen reportedly banned Harry and Meghan from having a photographer at her first face-to-face meeting with her namesake.
Some members of the royal family were reportedly concerned that photos of the gathering could end up on Netflix or another US TV network.
An hour before the last major anniversary event was due to begin, the family flew back to the US.
Now safely home, the Sussexes will be busy unpacking their luggage, including a stash of presents for Lilibet.
Children’s toys – including what is believed to be the birthday present from Prince Charles and Camilla’s royal toddler – were seen being unloaded from Meghan and Harry’s private jet.
Remarkably, one of the packages appeared to be a wooden swing, which looked almost identical to one given to William and Kate as a wedding present from Charles and Camilla.
On Tuesday, the Sussexes approved the release of a new photo of Lilibet to mark her first birthday.
The adorable photo shows a smiley Lilibet wearing a blue romper with a white bow in her auburn hair.
It was included in a series of photos taken at her picnic party at Frogmore Cottage in Windsor, taken by professional photographer and family friend Misan Harriman.
On the guest list at Lilibet’s birthday bash were Zara and Mike Tindall’s children, Mia, 8, Lena, 3, and Lucas, 1, along with daughters Peter Phillips and Autumn Kelly, Savannah, 11, and Isla, 10.
Also invited were Archie’s godfather Charlie Van Straubenzee and his brother Tom, who according to The Sun is the godfather of Princess Charlotte.
