Will the GoldenEye 007 Remaster be on the Xbox & Bethesda Games Showcase 2022? Recent leaks point to so much

Social media was abuzz with a steady dose of nostalgia and excitement over whether the classic GoldenEye 007 gets a makeover for Xbox. The 1997 Nintendo 64 game didn’t have many expectations to fulfill but quickly became a commercial and critical hit while showcasing the success of first-person shooters on game consoles.

The title had a canceled Xbox Live Arcade (XBLA) remaster in 2008 after being in development at special† The full playthrough of the XBLA was streamed on YouTube last year, with a near-final playable ROM image leaked online, as reported by VGC.

The latest development in this area almost confirms that the game may exist, and players may get an announcement soon, likely at the upcoming Xbox & Bethesda Showcase.

Players are eager to step into Bond’s shoes as a remastered GoldenEye 007 is likely to be announced soon

The buzz around the remaster has continued to grow since the stream last year. Recently, industry insider @Wario64 on Twitter shared the achievement list of the game seen on the Xbox website and a link to it.

The XBLA remake was developed in 2008 by Rare, who reportedly completed the conversion, got rid of most of the bugs and only needed two more months. It had to be canceled because discussions between Nintendo, MGM and Microsoft fell through. Rare later released the game’s spiritual successor in Perfect Dark.

In January 2022, TrueAchievements shared an achievement list for the game, but noted that the list was different from the canceled XBLA GoldenEye 007 remake that leaked last year. The article further stated that it was not yet clear whether the rumored game would be a remake, remaster or rerelease.

It was rumored that an announcement would soon follow, but that has not been the case. Recent developments are expected to have fans excited that a GoldenEye 007 game is indeed in the works and that they can step back into the classic as the iconic British agent.

Part of the ongoing Summer Game Fest, the Xbox & Bethesda Showcase 2022 will be a perfect event for an official announcement of the GoldenEye 007 remaster. The nostalgia for the older title, which will mark its 25th anniversary in 2022, and the desire for the British spy will surely make such a communication an instant hit.

Historically, licensing the James Bond image for video games has been a difficult process. Keeley Brenner, speaking to gamesindustry.biz, explained that:

“You have to make sure you stay true to the brand. Stay true to your brand bible, and your fans will follow. Because they’ll tell you if you’re wrong. There’s a huge community out there [behind each IP] and you don’t want to mess with them. You want to make sure they are brand advocates and mouthpieces. You want to make them something that they are proud of and that you are proud of. It’s all about the quality of the game.”

Creating this iconic Bond experience is not easy and may justify the reluctance to arbitrarily turn the movies into games. But lately there has been a clear shift in the attitude of the owners. IO Interactive, famous for their Hitman series, is leading Project 007, which will feature an original Bond origin story where players can earn their 00 status.

The timing is perfect for the announcement of the remaster of the Bond game that started the hype around it – GoldenEye 007 on Nintendo 64. And what better place to do that than at the upcoming Xbox & Bethesda Showcase.
