Big Freeze: ‘Thought I did the corset’ – Hamish, Barty steal show in Neale’s slide

Double Grand Slam champion Ash Barty and popular Australian media personality Hamish Blake will be two of 10 sliders who will plunge into the Big Freeze ice bath as the footy community demonstrates Neale Daniher’s incredible drive to take down the MND “beast” celebrates.

Up to 80,000 fans are expected at the MCG for the traditional Queen’s Birthday clash between Collingwood and Melbourne, with the Big Freeze slide being the highlight of the pre-game Fight MND festivities.

It will be the first Big Freeze on the ‘G to an uncapped crowd since 2019. The COVID-19 pandemic meant it didn’t even happen in 2020, as celebrities and footy stars most recently plunged into the MCG ice bath years to a limited crowd when the Magpies-Demons clash was held at the SCG due to a Melbourne lockdown.

The Big Freeze slides start time is just after 2:00 PM (AEST) and ends around 3:00 PM. From 2 p.m. there is a live report of every slider on Fox Footy.

The 10 sliders are Ash Barty (Aussie tennis legend), Hamish Blake (comedian), Jakara Anthony (Winter Olympian), Terry Daniher (Essendon footy great), Justin Lange (Aussie cricket great), David Neitz (Melbourne footy great), Eddie Betts (Carlton and Adelaide footy great), Rhonda Burchmore (Entertainer), Bec Maddern (TV personality), and Andy Maher (Radio and TV personality).

Music star Vance Joy was set to perform before the celebrity slide, but revealed on his social media platforms that he was forced to pull out after testing positive for Covid on Monday.

Neale Daniher will be the star of the show, with the ex-Demons coach and champion Fight MND campaigner to summon his strength and lead a march of Dees fans from Federation Square to the MCG – via “Daniher’s Way” – before the big event. Dees fans will eventually meet Collingwood supporters – they will march from the club’s headquarters on Olympic Boulevard – and enter the MCG as a united force for a great cause.

Fight MND hopes to raise $2 million for MND research by the end of Monday.

Costume: The Black Panther from the Marvel series, complete with mask.

Entry and splash: After calling on the crowd to get on top of the slide, he slammed his back against the water as he crossed himself. Fair to say Eddie didn’t like the cold. Jason Dunstall thinks Betts said “oh chills” when he got out of the tub.

Best Quote: “I avoided ice baths as a player…but I like how we’re in the bag.”

David King’s reviews: 17/10 (9/10 for costume, 8/10 for slide)

Jordan Lewis Review: 17/10 (9/10 for costume, 8/10 for slide)

Costume: Excellent. Poision Ivy from Batman. Red hair and an all-green romper with leaves that she sewed herself.

Entry and splash: Great roller coaster style scream as she descended the slide. Then an incredible lack of splash as the sled hit the water, with Rhonda’s head staying above the water the entire time.

Best Quote: “Neale, this is for you… I’d do something like that just for you. I hate the cold, I hate everything about it, I’ve never been on a toboggan run.”

David King’s reviews: 15/10 (10/10 for costume, 5/10 for slide)

Jordan Lewis Review: 15/10 (10/10 for costume, 5/10 for slide)

Costume: Radar O’Reilly from Mash, who impersonates his own ‘Radar’ nickname, complete with green cap and teddy bear.

Entry and splash: Went completely under. Excellent mention on the back and lapped up the time in the ice bath, letting out a big scream as he acknowledged the crowd. He also managed to keep his toy bear rack dry.

Best Quote: “These are four of the over-45s in the audience.”

David King’s reviews: 12/10 (4/10 for costume, 8/10 for slide)

Jordan Lewis Review: 11/10 (3/10 for costume, 8/10 for slide)

Costume: Katniss Everdeen from The Hunger Games, complete with suit and bow and arrow.

Entry and splash: I could see she is used to the cold and delivers a big splash upon entering. I didn’t stop smiling all the way down. It would have been a perfect score if she had shot the arrow while going down the slide.

Best Quote: N/A

David King’s reviews: 18/10 (10/10 for costume, 8/10 for slide)

Jordan Lewis Review: 17/10 (9/10 for costume, 8/10 for slide)

Costume: Queen Elsa from Frozen. Unfortunately the dress slipped a bit on arrival. Thank God he was wearing shorts under the dress.

Entry and splash: Stole the show, as expected. Costume on point and the entry was excellent, with arms and legs on entry to create maximum splash. It then sank to the bottom and spread its arms Randy Orton-style to acknowledge the crowd.

Best Quote: “I gave the honor to my daughter to choose who I would become. I just hope I keep it all there. I want to thank Max Gawn for donating his footy shorts… just in case we see too much of Elsa… I thought I had the corset put on better than that.”
