Richmond coach Damien Hardwick admits three-time Norm Smith medalist Dustin Martin is “questionable” for this week’s blockbuster game against Carlton as he is dealing with flu-like symptoms.

After returning from personal leave in round eight, Martin has played for the past four weeks but is suffering from an illness not related to Covid, Hardwick said on AFL 360.

“He’s got a bit of a lurgy, so right after that I’m going to go to his house and rub some vix on his chest and get him to get up,” he joked.

“He hasn’t trained today, he’s not particularly good at the moment, there’s a bit of flu around.

“He’s got a few days to get well and hopefully he’ll be back on track with some meds.

“He’s probably doubtful at this stage, but we’ll see how he goes. He’s a pretty fair beast Dustin, a 30 percent Dustin Martin is probably better than most, so we’ll give him every chance.”

Kane Lambert was the unused medical substitute in last week’s game and will be a focus at the selection table.

Opponent Carlton has own concerns about injuries, with Caleb Marchbank’s unfortunate run with an injury rearing its head again.

After the defender’s first AFL game in more than 1,000 days, Marchbank has suffered a lateral meniscus tear, which has left him out for up to eight weeks.

Marchbank was examined on Monday for a knee complaint and was eventually operated on Tuesday afternoon,

In other bad news, Adam Cerra suffered a minor hamstring injury, with scans confirming it after being out with a hamstring problem in the first quarter of last week’s win.

He is expected to miss two games.

St Kilda could be forced to make at least three changes for Friday night’s game against Essendon, which will be headlined by a midfielder Zak Jones

Jones was banned from further action in Saturday night’s loss to Brisbane Lions with a hamstring problem and, although scans have cleared him of injury, he will need to go through training to be available for selection.

Mitch Owens and Daniel McKenzie The other two blows were on a brutal night, with both now in the AFL’s concussion protocols and automatically ruled out for this week.

Jack Billings continues to work his way back into shape after a long injury layoff, while Hunter Clark is also in the frame for a senior return.

North Melbourne will be without a captain Jack Ziebell for the next four to five weeks, during which the 31-year-old will have to undergo surgery for a facial fracture.

Ziebell suffered the rift in Sunday’s loss to Greater Western Sydney and had played every game up to this point of the season.

West Coast Eagles coach Adam Simpson says freshman defender Rhett Bazzo is not far from making an AFL debut and will be eligible for roster this week.

Bazzo was picked No. 37 in last year’s draft but has yet to make his senior debut despite the Eagles using 43 players this season.

After enjoying a much-needed farewell, West Coast hosts Geelong at Optus Stadium on Saturday, with Simpson suggesting that balancing experience and youth will be a key challenge in the second half of the season.

“We have some guys in the back nine and respecting their career and where they are and exposing our younger players is what we will work through in the second half of the year,” he said.

“There are still 10 games to go and I hope to get the balance right, where one week we get a different look at the youth and the other weeks we get a different look at the players who deserve to play or have already been there. … and champion of the game.”
