‘Aladdin’s Cave Offered’: Seibold’s Broncos Nightmare a Warning to Ciraldo, Tigers, and Bulldogs

Paul Kent has urged Cameron Ciraldo to wait for a better chance of a head coach and he has begged the Tigers and Bulldogs to install experienced head coaches to lead their rebuild.

Kent used former Broncos coach Anthony Seibold as the perfect example of a good up and coming coach who made the wrong decision to trade the Rabbitohs for the Broncos and paid the price.

“I think the sensible move for both clubs (Tigers and Bulldogs) is to get an experienced coach who has done something,” said Kent.

“Look at Anthony Seibold, he came in and was a rookie coach. He took over a club in good form from Michael Maguire in South Sydney and was coach of the year.

“He’s had a great year and was offered Aladdin’s cave when it came to the Broncos by all their means and he thought, you know what I like, I’m going up there.

“But without the infrastructure there at a club that didn’t remember what success looked like, he was gone within two seasons and his career has been in free fall ever since.”

Kent also pointed to current Knights coach and former Storm and Roosters assistant Adam O’Brien as proof that things can go wrong quickly for even the most experienced and talented head coaches.

OPINION: A five-year rebuild for a club with NRL’s longest drought in the final is a tough sell

“Then you look at Adam O’Brien, who was an assistant to the Storm for 10 years. He then went and did a year with the Roosters.

“He had the best training ground an assistant coach could wish for. But as he has found with the Knights, it’s a tough job.

“Coaching is not just knowing your x’s and o’s. They all know what they know about footy.

“It’s about the managers. It’s about a president getting out of hand. It’s about a boy here who has a problem with his wife at home. This man here is unhappy because he doesn’t get paid enough.

“And you just have to sit there and manage it all and every coach goes to work and says, you know what the coaching is, the easy part. Everything else is difficult.”

Cameron Ciraldo weighs offers from the Panthers, Bulldogs and Tigers.Source: Delivered

Crawley agreed that the Bulldogs and Tigers cannot afford to teach a budding coach on the run if they want to rebuild their clubs as quickly as possible.

“That’s why an experienced coach is a good fit, because if you’ve been around the block, you’ve experienced it,” Crawley said.

“When you’re a young coach, you don’t know what you don’t know. If you don’t immediately know how to deal with player managers, they will make you have to pay surpluses for several players.

“Trent Barrett shows that you don’t have to go far back to know that the next best coach on hold has failed at the Bulldogs.

“Adam O’Brien is a great example because three years ago he was basically Cameron Ciraldo.”

Dave Riccio revealed that Ciraldo is friends with two former assistants who have been considered the second best young coach in Craig Fitzgibbon and Trent Barrett.

Fitzgibbon played the waiting game for the right opportunity and is thriving with the Sharks, while Barrett picked the bottom of the table Bulldogs after a failed stint at Manly and his head coach career seems all but over at 44.

“Cameron Ciraldo is very good friends with Craig Fitzgibbon and Trent Barrett, so he definitely communicated with Trent and learned a lot, so the warning signs are there from that point of view,” said Riccio.

“But he has molded himself to Fitzgibbon. He sees Fitzgibbon as a very good mentor and not too many people know how many jobs Fitzy turned down before they finally decided on the Sharks.”

Kent revealed that Craig Bellamy’s decision to turn down the Tigers for the Storm remains the best example of a head coach bidding his time for the right opportunity.

“Whenever we talk about this, we always go back to Craig Bellamy, who famously shuns the Wests Tigers, which was a prudent move,” said Kent.

“A year later he was offered the job at Storm and look what happened there.

“He joined a strong organization. Craig Fitzgibbon has entered an organization that knows where she stands. That was the center of the table instead of the bottom of the table.

“That’s something you like Ciraldo to sit back and watch.”
