Hyenas is a new multiplayer shooter from the team behind Alien: Isolation – IGN

Sega and Creative Assembly have announced hyenasa PvEvP shooter from the team behind Alien: Isolation and Halo Wars 2.

Hyenas is set in a future where billionaires have colonized Mars and made Earth inhospitable. Hyenas is a fast-paced multiplayer FPS in which players are cast as anti-hero pirates who steal from the mega-empires. Each match features 15 players, divided into five teams of three, and those teams compete to steal treasures from a starship and escape with the largest pile of loot. It sounds a bit like Hunt: Showdown, but with the slick and fast sensibilities of Apex Legends.

Further complicating matters is an AI-powered security force defending the vaults with the treasures you seek; Known as the MFPF (or ‘murphs’), these guards will fight against anyone who tries to steal from the billionaires.

“These ships are not defenseless,” creative director Charlie Bewsher told IGN. “They are full of security, sensors, switches, interactive systems and gadgets. It’s a great environment to play this competitive game in.”

Since the maps are set up for cargo ships traveling between Earth and Mars, there is also gravity. Certain parts of the maps have no gravity at all, allowing you to float around and use 3D space in new ways. Other locations, such as individual rooms and hallways, also have on/off switches for zero-g. Characters have maglock boots to help overcome any gravity issues, should zooming around freestyle isn’t your favorite mode of travel.

With countless corridors, vaults, rooms and hangar areas, every Hyena map is quite large. Creative Assembly says to expect something bigger than a regular PvP deathmatch map, but something not quite as big as a battle royale map. Despite this, the team is inspired by the kind of gameplay seen in games like Fortnite and Warzone.

“We didn’t want to make a battle royale, but we wanted to take the idea of creating this unpredictable, chaotic space where players would find this new gameplay, find new tactics, and eventually find new player stories,” said Bewsher.

Each match takes place aboard a freighter that carries items from Earth’s remnants to Mars. But those items, now traded by billionaires for huge amounts of money, may not be what you expect. In the world of Hyenas, pop culture artifacts from Earth’s past are the new diamonds, so you’ll be stealing everything from Rubik’s cubes and Sony Walkman tape decks to Sonic statues and green army men. Bewsher even says you could loot the first album you ever bought, promising that you’ll see a lot of different pop culture IPs in the game.

The cinematic reveal trailer shows off a freighter piled high with New York-themed memorabilia, including everything from subway trains to the Statue of Liberty itself. Hyenas don’t take themselves seriously at all, and the colorful comic book art reflects that.

Creative Assembly hasn’t detailed all the playable characters yet, but notes that they each fall into one of three categories: Join, Dodge, and Exploit. Engage characters are action-oriented, while evasive heroes are focused on agile moves and the occasional stealth. Exploit characters meanwhile are the hackers and support characters.

As part of the announcement stream on IGN, Creative Assembly has checked a number of Hyenas heroes by name. The Pro is a classic bank robber with a shotgun, deployable turret and President Nixon mask. Commander Wright is an astronaut with a foam cannon that can quickly create barricades, cover and climbing platforms. Doc Hotfix is a gamer who believes he is a character in a game, thus providing a fourth wall-breaking commentary. A few other characters are featured in the trailer, but they have yet to be detailed.

No release date for Hyenas has been announced as of yet, but a playable alpha is planned and can be registered at playhyenas.com. When Hyenas finally comes out, it will be available on Xbox and PlayStation consoles and PC via Steam and Epic Games Store.
