Dragon types are a powerful group. We’ve ranked the ten best Dragon Pokemon.
Dragons are a powerful type by nature. Not only are they often tucked away in the late game, but most of them look like they can turn your house into rubble in seconds. In addition, much of the Legendary Pokemon are Dragon-type, as are the vast majority of Pseudo-Legendaries. In Generation 6, they were seen as so powerful that the Fairy type was introduced to balance it out.
So what makes a good Dragon Pokemon? Basically, they need to be able to kick and look good while doing it. Even if they have no power, there is a certain aura around the best Dragon types; they look at you as if they know they are better than you. Even if it’s just a small apple.
It surprises the mind that this is only the second Ghost/Dragon Pokemon in existence. Giratina showed how great they can be, and now Dragapult has come home to hammer that point. I could talk about the great stats or the unique design, but let’s focus on the fact that it fires its pre-evolutions from cannons upside down.
You wouldn’t think a seahorse could be so terrifying, but Kingdra will quickly put you in your place. It manages to be slim and light, while having an overwhelming sense of power thanks to the expansive nature of its fins and ears. Not to mention, with powerful water and ice movements under his belt, very few can match it.
Latios & Latias
It seems unfair to separate the Lati twins on this list given how similar their designs are. They incorporate the idea of modern airplanes without being just a plane with a face. A ton of character comes from their appearance. At a glance you can see the younger playful nature of Latias, as well as the quiet confidence of Latios, it is a masterclass in creating attractive Pokemon.
Altaria proves that Dragon types can still look cute while possessing terrifying power. Bulk is the name of Altaria’s game, and once it’s set up, nothing breaks through that wall. It sits there and slowly shreds whatever you put in front of it until it triumphs. It does all this while being a cute blue bird with more floof than you could ever ask for.
Naganagel might just be the perfect Ultra Beast. It has that otherworldly look to it, and it doesn’t match other Pokemon, and yet it’s still an undeniably fantastic design. The varying shades of purple make it stand out in a crowd, and the sharpness of its wings is reminiscent of the lethality of something like Crobat. If the rest of the Ultra Beasts took a leaf out of Naganadel’s book, they would be judged much more favorably today.
Salamence has gone up and down over the years. It always looked cool, but many other Pokemon, especially pseudo-legendaries, stole its thunder for years. In the end, it bit back with a mega-evolution that was popular in the competition for an entire generation, and since then it has gained the respect it deserves.
Any argument against Rayquaza is negated by the fact that in Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire you are riding on his back into space, by a meteor. It doesn’t matter how it looks (great), or how strong it is (very), it’s just too cool for you.
Our final stop at the legendary corner, Dialga is the lord of the times, and he sure looks good. The royal blue is very attractive and contrasts with the glowing red eyes which probably see in more dimensions than we can count. Then you have his armor, which increases his cool factor, and a glowing diamond in the center of his chest. Perfection.
If even the smallest detail on Noivern were different it would probably look very silly, but as it stands every part of the design is in perfect balance to make it look fantastic. Purple and light blue aren’t colors that should work together, but with just enough black to separate them, this design works in spite of itself.
A land shark that would tear you to pieces before you even reach for your Pokéball, Garchomp is everything that’s great about Dragons. It’s powerful, intimidating and it knows it. The blue gives it a cool look, while the red and yellow make it stand out and draw attention to all of its sharpest and most terrifying features.
