Fabio Quartararo and Francesco Bagnaia battle for first place in final practice for the 2022 Dutch MotoGP, as dark clouds begin to gather in Assen.

Medium tires were the choice of choice as teams packed as much race preparation as possible into the 30 minute session, after Friday’s wet weather, but some soft tires (front and rear) as well as the hard rear tires made an appearance as well.

Quartararo led the timesheets for the first time this weekend on his final lap with the medium front and hard rear, with Bagnaia just 0.1 second slower on the soft-hard rubber.

Jack Miller was the best of the rest in third on soft tires with Aleix Espargaro fourth ahead of Aprilia on medium softs.

Qualifying 1, for those who are outside the top ten after the third free practice, will now start.

Fabio Quartararo will start the Dutch TT in Assen, the last event before the MotoGP summer break, with a 34 point lead over Aprilia’s Aleix Espargaro and 61 points ahead of Pramac Ducati’s Johann Zarco.

That means whatever happens on Sunday, the Yamaha star will continue to lead the world championships over the holidays, but the young Frenchman would no doubt be happy to finish the opening half with a repeat of last year’s win at Assen.

While Quartararo has built breathing room at the top, the likes of Gresini Ducati’s Enea Bastianini (-72 points) and especially factory Ducati’s Francesco Bagnaia have suffered badly in recent rounds and will be desperate to keep the ship stable with a podium return in the Netherlands.

A dark horse could be Espargaro’s team-mate Maverick Vinales, who finished second last season to then team-mate Quartararo (from pole position) in Assen and arrives fresh from his best race show at the RS-GP until he ran into ride height problems in Germany .

Franco Morbidelli has been given a long pre-race lap penalty after driving slowly on the raceline twice during Friday practice after being given a verbal warning at the Sachsenring for the same violation.

Alex Rins is back in action after having to give up a comeback from his broken wrist at the Sachsenring last weekend. However, after severe pain from his injured ribs on Friday, Pol Espargaro has withdrawn from the rest of the event in Assen.

Meanwhile, the infamous Assense weather will keep riders and teams on their toes all weekend.
