Emma Raducanu Channeled Her Inner Rafa Nadal as she advanced to the second round at Wimbledon on Monday, much to the delight of her home crowd.

The 19-year-old US Open champion defeated Alison Van Uytvanck 6-4 6-4 in the opening round, despite failing to force herself into the match.

Raducanu came to Wimbledon with concerns about her fitness, but broke her Belgian opponent’s serve in the seventh game of the game.

Van Uytvanck broke back, but Raducanu again seized the initiative by breaking again and then survived a tough test on her serve to take the first set 6-4.

The pair traded breaks in the second set and Raducanu broke again in the ninth game, comfortably holding the serve and sealing the win with a backhand volley to the delight of the crowd.

However, it was her actions during the post-match press conference that attracted the most attention, as she wore a polo shirt with Nadal’s raging bull logo on the front.

She was also seen on the practice field in a Nadal shirt on Monday morning before her game.

The Briton explained why she chose to wear Nadal’s shirt and said she wants to learn from the 22-time Grand Slam champion, who has won the Australian Open and French Open so far this year.

“I think Rafa just embodies fighting, that kind of energy,” she said.

“I’m bringing that in. In terms of energy, I think I’ve had a tough year, like it’s no secret.

“It’s all worth it to play on Center Court alone and win that way.

“I am absolutely delighted to be here. All the lessons I have learned over the past year will only serve me well for the future.”

Fans went crazy seeing Raducanu in Nadal’s shirt, but the reactions were not all positive.

Emma Raducanu overcomes injury problems at Wimbledon

Raducanu, who has not won more than two tournament matches since her maiden grand slam victory at the US Open last year, will face France’s Caroline Garcia in the second round.

She admitted that her preparations for Wimbledon had not been ideal.

“I haven’t played tennis for two weeks, and this week I hit about an hour a day,” she said.

“My preparation was not necessarily the best.

“But I know that when it comes to the games, I feel like I’m going to be really special. I don’t feel like I need a huge amount of preparation. Of course I do that to build up physically.

“I think a lot of it is mental, and I definitely left with faith today.

“I know I can compete with anyone on the other side of the track if I really go for it.”

Meanwhile, new World No.2 Our Jabeur recorded an impressive 6-1 6-3 victory about the Swedish qualifier Mirjam Bjorklund to be the first big gun to advance to the second round.

Estonian third seed Anett Kontaveit followed and defeated American Bernarda Pera 7-5 6-1.

Jabeur’s win made up for a shocking first round loss at the French Open to Magda Linette in her most recent grand slam outing.

“I don’t like to make the mistake twice,” said Jabeur.

“I learned a lot from the first round at Roland Garros. Of course everything feels different here. I feel ready for it.”

The 27-year-old is the first African to reach No. 2 in the ranking and said she hopes to inspire more Arabs to play the sport.
