Richard Wilkins says he ‘didn’t flinch’ when he saw son Christian in a backless dress at the Logies

Richard Wilkins has revealed he ‘didn’t flinch’ when he saw his son Christian Wilkins on the red carpet in a backless dress during the Logie Awards last month.

The entertainment reporter, 68, who defended his son in an emotional Instagram post last month after he was trolled online for his Logie Award outfit, told Confidential of the Daily Telegraph on Sunday that he admires his son’s ‘courage and style’.

Richard said his son is just having fun with his choice of fashion ensembles.

“I don’t understand (parents aren’t in their son’s corner), but I do. I wasn’t shocked when I saw Christian in that dress. I didn’t think much about it,” he told the publication of Christian’s Logie Award dress.

He admitted that there has been a “strange time” over the years when Christian came down the stairs in an outfit he found a bit questionable.

‘It’s not quite my cup of tea, I couldn’t get it done. But he does it because he’s having fun.’

Richard further praised his son for “shaking things up” with his bold sense of style.

“I admire his courage. He has a great style. He is fashion forward. I’m boring in my black suit, black shoes and a bow tie. I’m not really shaking things up, am I?’ he said.

In an Instagram post last month, Richard fired back at critics after trolls suggested Christian, 26, was a “family disappointment.”

“So…to anyone who dares to suggest that I’m somehow ‘ashamed’ of my son Christian…for whatever reason…You’re wrong!” he raged.

‘I couldn’t be prouder!! He is an exceptional human being who will leave his mark on the world long after his adversaries are gone. I love you unconditionally.’

Richard wasn’t alone in defending Christian, while Today’s co-star Karl Stefanovic also expressed support for the blonde socialite.

‘Extremely exceptional. He is a light. A beautiful human light. Which comes from beautiful people. And light,” Karl commented.

“Anyone who thinks otherwise isn’t worth knowing or paying attention to you. I love you so much. Fly higher,” he added.

Christian also hit back at a Twitter troll who criticized his flamboyant wardrobe.

Anonymous user @SaraVic333 tweeted that ‘it’s not normal’ for men to wear women’s clothes, before adding: ‘STOP normalizing this bulls**t!!!’

Christian responded to this criticism by mocking the way some people react hysterically to men who like to wear dresses.

‘What is happening to the world!!!! Masculinity is coming to an end!!! Burn everything!!’ he tweeted with lavish support from his Twitter followers.

Many fans praised the Filthy Rich and Homeless star for embracing a feminine look instead of the traditional tuxedo that men prefer on the red carpet.

“She’s so mad that you’re prettier than her and can take off a dress she absolutely couldn’t… jealous IS a disease,” one Twitter user wrote.

“I think you’re a fantastic role model,” added another.

Christian put his best fashion foot forward last month when he arrived on the Logies red carpet in a sheer backless dress.

He wore his long blond hair loose, opted for a pair of quirky hoof style heels and sported a dramatic necklace slung down his back.

Christian made sure the cameras caught him from every angle while showing off his model-like features, including his chiseled jawline.

Last year he spoke about his experimental style in an interview with Body + Soul.

“I remember I used to work at Channel Nine, just doing marketing and some days I would go in with pink glitter all over my eyes. And they’d say, ‘Why are you wearing pink glitter?” he said.

“I’d say, “Because I woke up and was a little sad today, and I felt like it was pink glitter eyeshadow day.” I’ve always gone into makeup with that ethos.

“If you want to wear it, if you want to do eyes and lips, who tells you you can only do one? Do it! Do what makes you feel good.’
