Complete Guide to Skills and Abilities in Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes

There is a level of complexity in army management in it Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes which makes it hard to believe that this is the same developer who once gave us nothing but the early Dynasty Warriors games. At the time, Musou’s “franchise” was based almost entirely on hacking and slashing player achievements on maps, with limited growth systems and nothing to equip without increasingly powerful weapons.

In the tradition of Fire Emblem, and particularly closely related to Three Houses, Three Hopes contains a plethora of skills and abilities divided into several categories. Some are automatic. Others need to be equipped. Locks are limited. Don’t go overboard – read this guide and you’ll understand everything it takes to come up with the best character builds in Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes.

Types of skills and abilities in Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes

There are three different categories of skills in Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes. We include the word “skills” in this guide because many players will find the terms interchangeable, and the game’s own NPCs often switch between the terms, which can cause confusion.

Each of these is fundamental to fully customizing your characters and/or overarching combat strategies. Some are significantly more productive than others, but all three categories come together to get a complete overview of every character in the game.

Equitable Skills

By far the most abundant, Equipable skills are learned quickly as units level up within the classes you’ve assigned them. Each class will learn more than a dozen of these lessons as units progress from the “E” rank to the “S”. There is enough overlap that later on it seems that some classes are learning fewer skills. mastered some of what the newer class would have offered.

Equipable skills come in a variety of forms. There are weapon bonuses which can help to ward off certain types of enemies. There are classroom skills which aid a particular class in furthering its identity; for example, the Brigand and Warrior classes share “Warrior’s Wisdom.” This will cause any class action to (possibly) boost the Stun Gauge. This is just one of many examples, and since equipped skills are interchangeable, maybe you think it’s wise to mix and match between classes.

Is the starting number of equipable skill slots too small for you? Later in the game you will have a hard time choosing between so many great choices. Satisfying, the Tactics facility can teach your units techniques that increase the number of slotsleaving you with less useful advantages to sacrifice in pursuit of others.

Class Skills

Class Abilities are probably the easiest to understand. They are often solitary, although they come in groups of two or three, and they are innate in a class so they don’t need to be rested. That said, conceptually they often overlap with equippable abilities, as is the case with the Brigand’s Lance Buster which serves to increase damage against lance-bearers like Cavaliers.

This type of ability is active by default and cannot be disabled (not that there would be any practical reason to do so).

Again, the Tactics Facility can help here. You can increase class skills to increase their effectiveness.

Unique Skills

These are the lifebloods of individual characters. Some of these are shared by two or even three units, but the majority offer entirely unique approaches to battlefield strategy.

Again, we’re referring to Hilda’s character sheet above; Lightning Bound adds some nice electrical damage, while Advocate improves her adjutant value (Hilda is a self-proclaimed cheerleader, after all!) and Delicate Flower is an ironic label for something that increases her ability to take over enemy strongholds.
