Bridie Connell: The 10 Funniest Things I’ve Ever Seen (On the Web)

Ah, internet. My reliable friend. I turn to it when I have to smile (fun pet videos), when I have to cry (war veterans are reunited with their children), and when I have to destroy what’s left of my self-esteem (Instagram). There are plenty of arguments as to why life would be better without, and honestly? It probably would be. But it wouldn’t be that funny either. Here’s a bunch of stuff from the world wide web that always makes me laugh.

There is nothing I enjoy more than people trying to make the world a better place. Especially when they make the world a better place in a way they never intended. I can imagine the conversations that took place during the drafting of this campaign:

“We need a compelling and educational campaign to tackle the horrors of addiction.”

“Yeah, one that shows we’re in this together, as a community.”

“One that doesn’t stereotype addicts.”

“I’ve got it!”

The result is what I think they call a “swing and a miss.” A+ for effort, though.

If there was a prize for the best acknowledgment, it would win. Julia Louis-Dreyfus is brilliantly funny (while taking an award for being brilliantly funny) and she remains my hero.

Here’s one for my fellow theater kids. This pitch-perfect sketch is from comedian and writer Jacob Kaplan. Does it make me laugh? Yes. It makes me tense every muscle in my body and hold my breath while trying not to think about the time 14 year old Bridie wrote a play about the dangers of DRIVING WITH DRINK and also DRUGS, which inexplicably culminated in a spicy dance routine? … No comment.

Amber Ruffin is one of the most versatile and talented comedians out there. I like a lot of what she does, but this song is a special favorite. Hilarious, a little creepy and downright catchy: a winning combination!

This sketch of the Big Train sketch group from the late 1990s still delights me. Short, sharp, stupid. Please and thank you!

Adrian Bliss, Certified Internet Star™, is a go-to for inventive sketches (and a seemingly endless supply of costumes). Many of his skits feature historical characters, such as this one about a Greek soldier in the Trojan horse. That layer of awkwardness that the British are good at drives this skit, and now that I’ve seen it I can only hear The Aeneid read in Bliss’s voice: “I sing of arms and a man, innit.”

utilities this one, THIS is some recognizable content. Don’t pretend you’ve never tied one up and woke up on a golf course/boat/golden lame suit, because I won’t believe you. I give you this hangover with a hangover that woke up in the wrong house, perfect to sum up the delight of a great nighttime great story. Of course, it’s made all the better by the Glasgow accent.

*Assumes an older wizard voice* I’ve studied and performed improv since I was knee high to a grasshopper, so the Whose Line crew are some of my old heroes. This game is one of my favorites, not only because it’s so funny and clever, but because the ‘mistake’ made around 2:20 represents the joy and collaboration that good improv is all about. Oh dear, this got more serious than I planned. Just look at it!

A masterclass in physical comedy, from one of the greats.

Last but not least, here’s a video to save for a day that will give you a little boost. This is my favorite of all the “laughing baby” videos, a classic in a busy genre. And sure, if we measure “funny” through sharp satirical commentary or well-crafted punchlines, this is a bust – but no other video activates my mirror neurons and makes me laugh like this one.

Seriously, if you see this and don’t feel a little better, call a cardiologist because you don’t have a HEART.
