The wildest night of music is here, with the MTV VMAs underway in New Jersey.
The annual awards ceremony will be broadcast on Foxtel’s MTV Channelwith LL Cool J, Nicki Minaj and Jack Harlow co-hosting the festivities.
And it turns out previous posts were trueJohnny Dep did indeed make a surprising cameo.
In what was touted as a mainstream “comeback” for the 59-year-old actor, he briefly performed as the Moonman statue at the start of the show.
In scenes that contrasted sharply with the Virginia courtroom where he spent five weeks in May, Depp’s unusually austere face was superimposed in the astronaut costume, which was held by wires above the stage.
The pirates of the caribbean star then made a cheeky joke about needing work in what was clearly a pre-recorded segment.
“I want you to know I’m available for birthdays, bar mitzvahs, weddings, wakes… Anything you need,” Depp was heard to say.
“And you know what? I needed the work.”
Amber Heard fans took to Twitter to call the stunt “shameful.”
Others jumped up to defend the actor, stating that they were happy to see him.
Elsewhere, Fergie made her highly anticipated comeback to perform live for the first time in four years, opening the show with one of her biggest hits, glamorous, where she was joined by Harlow.
The Black Eyed Peas singer wore a sparkly two-set with the words ‘First Class’ on her top and skirt.
Lizzo continued the opening track with an energetic display of her latest hits, About damn time and 2 Be loved.
One of the early winners of the evening, who else but Taylor Swift?
The pop powerhouse made a surprise appearance at the awards ceremony, where she took home the award for Best Longform Video for the 10-minute version of her love song, But too good.
“Thank you for this nice indication that we did something right,” said Swift.
Snoop Dogg couldn’t have been more on-brand with his performance, where he was seen with a giant joint.
The rapper performed alongside Eminem in a set that started with the two as animated characters before taking the stage in real time.
The Michael Jackson Video Vanguard honoree, Minaj, performed a medley that spanned her entire career, starting with her show-stealing verse in the 2010 Kanye West single Sample and ending with a performance of her latest single, the US number one Super crazy girl.
It used to be all about the Red carpetbefore celebrities flocked to the Prudential Center, where a star-studded lineup of artists takes the stage, including Eminem, Snoop Dogg, Blackpink and Eurovision rockers Maneskin.
In terms of awards, Harlow leads the nominations alongside Harry Styles, with eight nods apiece. Billie Eilish, Drake, Dua Lipa, Ed Sheeran, The Weeknd and Taylor Swift follow closely with five nominations each.
